May is cycling month in the Santa Cruz Mountains
May is glorious in the mountains. The morning air is thick
with evaporation, new ferns are unfurling, and the colors of shade-loving
sorrel, trillium, foxglove and violets interrupt the forest greenery. It is a
time before the microclimates heat up and after the winter rains, when the
morning air is especially crisp and clear.
May is cycling month in the Santa CruzMountains: a great time for the fit
and courageous to tackle the hills and switchbacks on a bicycle. If you don’t
want to ride, there are many vantage points where you can toast the intrepid
riders with a glass of Santa Cruz
wine.
The humming tires and clicking gears returned to the mountains on May Day, with
two bicycle races: the Bonny Doon Challenge, which gave locals the chance to
test their skills on a portion of the Stage 3 route of the Amgen Tour of California;
and the Cat's Hill Bicycle Race in Los Gatos.
Later in the month, mark your calendars for May 13, Bike to Work/School Day, and May 15, the Amgen Fun & Fitness Festival, leading to Tour of California's Santa Cruz stage on May 18.
